Designer Interviews | Oct 31, 2015

With six different cuts, a range of colours and prints and the most high quality fabrics used, it is no wonder why Abysse is making waves in the swimwear market. Having launched in December 2014, Abysse is a label of love designed by high-profile model, avid surfer and total legend, Hanalei Reponty. The cult neoprene brand is based between Sydney, Australia and San Clemente, California. Check out our interview with Hanalei here.

Where did you come up with the name Abysse?
I had been trying to find a meaningful name, that was not trademarked for a long time. One day, I was with my best friend Kirra who is studying environmental studies. I helped her for her assignment on the ocean, and here it was Abyss. I loved it. I just decided to write it in French, with an E!

What led you to the decision to launch your swimwear brand Abysse?
Creating Abysse has been a dream for a very long time.

After surfing for Ripcurl, it made me want to create a brand of my own, which was based on my values especially towards the environment, in order to empower women all over the world. I wanted to create a brand that stood for something that I believed in. The wetsuits are hand made in California out of Limestone based neoprene, which the most eco-friendly solution of the 21st century. It has been an amazing journey, supporting athletes that have a deep love for the ocean.. I want to be able to tell their stories, of who they are and how they affect the world; not mine. I want Abysse to be a second skin for them, and a support for all the amazing girls around the world, doing a little or a lot. I want it to be real.

Who is the Abysse girl?
The Abysse girl is energetic, full of passion and drive, a tomboy, that is not scared of pushing her limits but with a sense of style.

If you could dress anyone in Abysse who would it be?
Jenna De Rosnay X Elle Macpherson

What is your favourite summer style?
I absolutely love the Jenna Bikini, I can surf, swim and dive in it.

How would you describe Abysse in three words?
Passionated... Active... Environmentally-aware...

What do you think the most important thing is to remember when buying swimwear?
For me it is simplicity. I want something simple, which will stay on and leave minimal tan lines. Feeling good and comfortable in your swimwear is so important.

Do you have any exciting future plans for Abysse?
Yes, a lot! We are developing an active wear capsule, and we cant wait to see how it all turns out...

What is a quote or piece of advice you live by?
There are so many... Live your life to the fullest and never regret anything.

Summer is all about… waves crashing, sand everywhere, the smell of monoi, warm ocean, happiness.
